Measuring the social and economic impacts of creative businesses

TBR is commissioned by Creative Leicestershire to measure the social and economic impact of creative sole traders. This project is an opportunity to display our skills in researching ‘hard-to-reach' groups and subjects and is supported by the Arts Council.

TBR is delighted to work with both organisations to cast light upon the impact of creative sole traders. Whilst the work will be based in Leicestershire it will have implications for artist sole traders across the UK.

TBR is undertaking specialist consultancy support to Bedford Borough Council to assist with the preparation of their Local Economic Assessment. TBR's role in the production of this assessment focuses upon conducting an in-depth analysis of GVA and employment trends in the borough and key sub-sectors within it. TBR will also examine the role of low carbon businesses within Bedford's economy using its own unique business data resource, TCR.

TBR's work forms an invaluable evidence base, helping the client to identify clusters and sub-sectors with the potential to create high value added jobs in and around Bedford. Detailed GVA analysis is one of TBR’s suite of gap-filling offers, which also includes analysis of the contribution of small businesses and sole traders, future employment land use studies, and cluster studies.

TBR works with DCMS to develop Cultural and Sporting Asset Mapping Toolkit

The Culture and Sport Physical Assets Mapping Toolkit requires TBR, in collaboration with Cities Institute, to create a standardised approach to the mapping of cultural and sporting assets for use by a range of stakeholders. The project will facilitate local area mapping of such assets by providing consistency with other data sources and aid comparison between separate mapping exercises.

The project has been commissioned as part of the Culture and Sport Evidence (CASE) programme. More information on which can be found here: http://www.culture.gov.uk/case/index.html

TBR introduces LEA Toolkit and Value Added Support Services

Following the Sub National Review it is now statutory for local authorities to complete Local Economic Assessments (LEA). This is a requirement of the Local Democracy, Economic Development and Construction (LDEC) Bill, which outlines how Local Economic Assessments will be used within regions as part of an evidence base for economic development.

The Improvement and Development Agency has produced guidelines on the steps needed to establish a LEA. TBR is providing LEA evidence and reports for a number of Local Authorities, and has identified gaps in evidence bases and additional data that would benefit process. In summary, TBR is able to provide:

-     Detailed commercial and labour market statistics

-     Strategic insight based upon detailed evidence about local economies

-     Assessment of the implications identified from strengths and weaknesses

-     Linked property analysis to feed into the development of LDF and Core Strategy

-     Analysis that supports stakeholders involved in detailed local projects

-     Evidence in support of local investment decisions

TBR provides added value to Local Economic Assessments using TCR, a detailed dataset that reflects the changing economy in a comprehensive way.

You can view more information about TBR's LEA work by clicking here.

Visit our Case Studies webpage for details of our recent work with the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham.

TBR Company News

TBR said goodbye to Steve Miller, who is leaving TBR to fulfill his passion for travel. TBR would like to thank Steve Miller for his hard work and hope that his leaving present will remind him of his time in the North East.

Duncan Cobbett recently competed on the Weakest Link. Despite not winning, Duncan gave a good account of himself and provided us with many tales and background information on the show. Until recently this was available on BBC iplayer, but we are assured there will be repeats in the future.

TBR is improving its environmental credentials; our use of paper shredding and recycling saved 15 trees from destruction last year. As TBR has developed we are very conscious of our environmental impact and are looking to reduce waste and be more active in understanding our role in climate change.

Groundwork Feasibility Study

Groundwork North East commissioned TBR to assess the feasibility of developing a Sustainability Skills Centre in the North East. Groundwork is a national charity with regional trusts that work with employers, partners and communities to create sustainable environments and to deliver practical solutions to social, economic and environmental regeneration issues. TBR investigated the potential demand for such a centre in the sub-regions (and region) and the potential sites on which it could be developed. This work provides Groundwork with detailed information needed to develop this project further and set in motion plans to establish a Sustainability Skills Centre in the region.

TBR donation to Haiti appeal

For Christmas 2009 TBR sent out electronic cards for the first time. We decided to make donations to charity in lieu of the expenditure that posted cards incur.

Following Haiti's catastrophic earthquake on the 12th of January the choice was obvious, and the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Haiti Earthquake appeal was our charity of choice.

Labour Market Intelligence update for Housing and Property

TBR has recently completed an update of sector-specific labour market information for Asset Skills, the employer-led Sector Skills Council for Facilities Management, Housing, Property, Planning, Cleaning and Parking. The focus of the research was to provide an insight into how the Housing & Property sector skills sets differ as between separate Housing and Property activities, so that the individual sectors can be better understood. Whilst superficially similar, Housing and Property are important distinct areas within Asset Skills' footprint.

Housing centres upon the management and habitation of stock and covers housing associations, housing maintenance and building.

Property is largely concerned with the sale and valuation of stock and includes estate agencies, surveying and valuation.

Our report built upon a similar study we completed for Asset Skills in 2007, enabling us to compare the two sets of data and gain insight into the changes that had occurred.

Somerset Renewable Sector research

TBR, working in partnership with PHS consulting, has recently completed an important study into the renewable energy business sector in Somerset on behalf of Somerset County Council.

Renewable energy is a sector with strong growth prospects in Somerset, and the study focused on the past, present and future contribution of the renewable energy sector to economic development. The key objectives of the study were to profile the renewable energy sector in Somerset, evaluate current support for the development of the sector and develop recommendations to promote its growth and competitiveness.

The final report has been warmly welcomed by Somerset County Council and its  partners, and they are preparing to start evaluating and implementing its recommendations. Businesses in the sector were very supportive of the research and engaged fully in the project.

If you would like more information about the project please get in touch with Fiona Dodd at TBR on 0191 279 0905 or at fiona.dodd@tbr.co.uk
